In drinking water supply systems, energy recovery has already been applied for a long time. However, there is still unused potential, especially in the range of low installed capacities, for example at transfer shafts or tank-inlets in the southern part of Germany. The so-called counter pressure Pelton turbine, which has been successfully implemented for energy recovery purposes in Switzerland, could be used to exploit this potential. This machine type was developed because the counter pressure operation enhances a more arbitrary installation of Pelton turbines without being restricted to the back water level. To maintain the casing water level at normal height, an air cushion must be induced and the casing has to be designed pressure-tight. In comparison to other hydraulic machinery used in the same field of application, Pelton or impulse turbines have efficiency advantages, especially in conditions with varying discharges. This is due to the fact that the runner can be partially loaded while still running without significant losses. One challenge that arises from the application of this turbine type is the air detrainment that might occur during counter pressure operation. On the one hand, detrained air causes corrosion and other negative effects, such as reduced transport capacity, in the tailwater system. On the other hand, the detrained air has to be replenished, which consumes energy and lowers the efficiency of the hydraulic machinery. In this context, the air supplied into the casing is denoted as air demand and is investigated within the scope of the presented work. This research is necessary to determine the dependency of air demand on operating parameters and on geometrical dimensions of the casing as well as to optimize the machine particularly in view of minimization of air demand.
