<jats:title>Mericarp micromorphology and anatomy of <jats:italic>Salvia hedgeana</jats:italic> Dönmez, <jats:italic>S. huberi</jats:italic> Hedge and <jats:italic>S. rosifolia</jats:italic> Sm. (section <jats:italic>Salvia</jats:italic> Hedge, Lamiaceae)</jats:title>
Mericarp (nutlet) micromorphology and pericarp structure of three morphologically similar endemic <jats:italic>Salvia</jats:italic> species; <jats:italic>Salvia hedgeana, S. huberi</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>S. rosifolia</jats:italic> were investigated using LM, SEM and TEM. <jats:italic>Salvia hedgeana</jats:italic> has larger mericarps and abscission scars than <jats:italic>S. huberi</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>S. rosifolia</jats:italic>. Mericarp length to width ratio ranges from 1.11 in <jats:italic>S. hedgeana</jats:italic> to 1.60 in <jats:italic>S. huberi</jats:italic>. Mericarp shape is mainly ovoid, rarely broadly ovoid in <jats:italic>S. hedgeana</jats:italic>, and oblong in <jats:italic>S. huberi</jats:italic>. The mericarp surface sculpturing pattern in all species is colliculate. However, exocarp cells are pentangular-hexangular in <jats:italic>S. hedgeana</jats:italic>, irregular in <jats:italic>S. huberi</jats:italic> and rounded and smaller in <jats:italic>S. rosifolia</jats:italic>. In <jats:italic>Salvia huberi</jats:italic> anticlinal walls are undulate whereas in <jats:italic>S. hedgeana</jats:italic> and <jats:italic>S. rosifolia</jats:italic> anticlinal walls are straight. <jats:italic>Salvia hedgeana</jats:italic> was distinguished from the others by the thickest pericarp (146-185 μm). The sclerenchymatous region significantly varied between the species. It was 84-99 μm in <jats:italic>S. hedgeana</jats:italic>, 56-82 μm in <jats:italic>S. huberi</jats:italic> and 27-61 μm in <jats:italic>S. rosifolia</jats:italic>. The mesocarp was also thicker in <jats:italic>S. hedgeana</jats:italic>. The wetted mericarps produced mucilage, but <jats:italic>S. huberi</jats:italic> differed from the others in having translucent-milky white opaque mucilage with fibres or radiating cordons.
