Abstract

A theory is proposed that explains why periodical sleeping is an unavoidable necessity and what might be the cause of the different stages of sleep and of yawning. The theory is based on consideration of the wakefulness activities of animals that cannot be realized without accurate time interval measurements and of how such measurements can be implemented from the point of view of efficiency of the data management.
