+content = "If the memory of the anti-fascist Resistance has served as a screen memory for collaboration and colonial violence, recent postmemories and the polemical debates they arouse are equally marked by telling silences. In this article, I analyse two contemporary French novels in which the memories of the Resistance and of the Shoah are entangled: Laurent Binet's HHhH and Yannick Haenel's Jan Karski. Nevertheless, these novels and the polemics in which they find themselves are still riddled with screaming silences concerning collaboration. These questions will be discussed alongside the novels' conscious use of fictionality as a metacommentary on processes of commemoration."

+content = "Müllerian mimicry strongly exemplifies the power of natural selection. However, the exact measure of such adaptive phenotypic convergence and the possible causes of its imperfection often remain unidentified. Here, we first quantify wing colour pattern differences in the forewing region of 14 co-mimetic races of the butterfly species <i>Heliconius erato</i> and <i>Heliconius melpomene</i> and measure the extent to which mimicking races are not perfectly identical. Next, using recent CRISPR/Cas9 KO experiments of the gene <i>WntA</i>, which has been mapped to colour pattern diversity in these butterflies, we explore the exact areas of the wings in which <i>WntA</i> affects colour pattern formation differently in <i>H. erato</i> and <i>H. melpomene.</i> We find that, while the relative size of the forewing pattern is generally nearly identical between co-mimics, the CRISPR/Cas9 KO results highlight divergent boundaries in the wing that prevent the co-mimics from achieving perfect mimicry. We suggest that this mismatch may be explained by divergence in the gene regulatory network that defines wing colour patterning in both species, thus constraining morphological evolution even between closely related species."

The annual time series of estimates begins with the most recent decennial census data and extends to the vintage year. The reference date for estimates is July 1. The estimates are based on the 2010 Census and reflect changes to the April 1, 2010 population due to the Count Question Resolution program and geographic program revisions. +content = "Müllerian mimicry strongly exemplifies the power of natural selection. However, the exact measure of such adaptive phenotypic convergence and the possible causes of its imperfection often remain unidentified. Here, we first quantify wing colour pattern differences in the forewing region of 14 co-mimetic races of the butterfly species <i>Heliconius erato</i> and <i>Heliconius melpomene</i> and measure the extent to which mimicking races are not perfectly identical. Next, using recent CRISPR/Cas9 KO experiments of the gene <i>WntA</i>, which has been mapped to colour pattern diversity in these butterflies, we explore the exact areas of the wings in which <i>WntA</i> affects colour pattern formation differently in <i>H. erato</i> and <i>H. melpomene.</i> We find that, while the relative size of the forewing pattern is generally nearly identical between co-mimics, the CRISPR/Cas9 KO results highlight divergent boundaries in the wing that prevent the co-mimics from achieving perfect mimicry. We suggest that this mismatch may be explained by divergence in the gene regulatory network that defines wing colour patterning in both species, thus constraining morphological evolution even between closely related species."

Hierzu wurde im Jahr 2019 eine eigenes Portal freigeschaltet: https://ikmk.smb.museum/ndp. Das Münzkabinett koordiniert die Exporte der Daten aller IKMK-Partner, wofür die Formate LIDO und seit 2019 JSON zur Verfügung stehen, und es bietet Beratung und Hilfestellung bei der Objektdokumentation. +content = "Neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is one of the most severe digestive tract emergencies in neonates, involving bowel edema, hemorrhage, and necrosis, and can lead to serious complications including death. Since it is difficult to diagnose early, the morbidity and mortality rates are high due to severe complications in later stages of NEC and thus early detection is key to the treatment of NEC. In this thesis, a novel automatic image acquisition and analysis system combining a color and depth (RGB-D) sensor with an infrared (IR) camera is proposed for NEC diagnosis. A design for sensors configuration and a data acquisition process are introduced. A calibration method between the three cameras is described which aims to ensure frames synchronization and observation consistency among the color, depth, and IR images. Subsequently, complete segmentation procedures based on the original color, depth, and IR information are proposed to automatically separate the human body from the background, remove other interfering items, identify feature points on the human body joints, distinguish the human torso and limbs, and extract the abdominal region of interest. Finally, first-order statistical analysis is performed on thermal data collected over the entire extracted abdominal region to compare differences in thermal data distribution between different patient groups. Experimental validation in a real clinical environment is reported and shows encouraging results."

+content = "The prevalence of non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) has now reached epidemic proportions, but the role of gene-lifestyle interactions in its pathogenesis remains poorly understood. While evidence for an inverse association between odd-chain length fatty acids (OCFA) and cardiometabolic diseases, suggests a possible link between OCFAs and NAFLD, little is known about the impact of diet, gut microbiota and peroxisomal biogenesis on the metabolism of OCFAs. We hypothesized that suboptimal diet, altered gut microbiota and peroxisomal biogenesis could promote the development of NAFLD by impairing the metabolism of OCFAs. This thesis aimed to understand the effect of dietary fat/protein on the genetic and metabolic regulation of lipids and OCFAs in relation to NAFLD, using a high fat diet (HFD) model, well established in the literature for inducing obesity and insulin resistance in mice within 4 weeks, and a low protein diet (LPD) model, known to promote NAFLD. Under specific pathogen free or normal husbandry conditions, a HFD reduced serum OCFA in mice after 4 and 12 weeks of feeding, and down-regulated the activity of several key enzymes in fatty acid metabolism (desaturases, lyase, elongase). Liver histology also showed deposition of lipid droplets and higher expression of peroxin 14 protein in HFD fed mice (Chapter 3). The characterisation of gut microbiota revealed an alteration in propionate-producing bacteria, Lachnospiraceae and Clostridiales, in HFD fed mice (Chapter 4). Mice fed with carbohydrate rich-LPD for 7 weeks resulted in lower levels of serum OCFA, increased CD36 mRNA and peroxin 14 expressions. However, OCFA did not change in the reduced and quality carbohydrate-LPD after 8 weeks (Chapter 5). In conclusion, these findings provide evidence that HFD and carbohydrate rich-LPD reduced OCFA via changes in gut microbiota and peroxisomal biogenesis in the liver and increases our understanding of how suboptimal diets contributes to NAFLD."

+content = "The rigidity of the human foot is often described as a feature of our evolution for upright walking and is bolstered by a thick plantar aponeurosis that connects the heel to the toes. Previous descriptions of human foot function consider stretch of the plantar aponeurosis via toe extension (windlass mechanism) to stiffen the foot as it is levered against the ground for push-off during walking. In this study, we applied controlled loading to human feet <i>in vivo</i>, and studied foot function during the push-off phase of walking, with the aim of carefully testing how the foot is tensioned during contact with the ground. Both experimental paradigms revealed that plantar aponeurosis strain via the 'windlass mechanism' could not explain the tensioning and stiffening of the foot that is observed with increased foot-ground contact forces and push-off effort. Instead, electromyographic recordings suggested that active contractions of ankle plantar flexors provide the source of tension in the plantar aponeurosis. Furthermore, plantar intrinsic foot muscles were also contributing to the developed tension along the plantar aspect of the foot. We conclude that active muscular contraction, not the passive windlass mechanism, is the foot's primary source of rigidity for push-off against the ground during bipedal walking."

+content = "1. Plant soil legacies consisting of species-specific microbial communities are hypothesized to play a critical, structuring role in plant species co-existence processes. Plant species are thought to perform worse on soil conditioned by the same species compared to soil of other species, which serves as a self-limitation mechanism and averts mono-dominance of strong competitors. Here we test in a multi-species community setting, whether root colonisation and resource utilisation of soil patches with distinct soil legacies, are consistent with this hypothesis. 2. We grew eight grassland species together in an outdoor mesocosm setup in unconditioned soil and created soil patches in these communities conditioned by one of four plant species, or a soil mixture of all four. During two subsequent growing seasons, we tested the effect of these conditioned soil patches on belowground root colonisation into the patches of each surrounding plant species using a novel sequencing based approach. In addition, we tested the effect of soil conditioning on local root functioning by injecting tracers into the soil patches and measuring the recovery in aboveground biomass. 3. Against expectations, plant species did not place less roots in own soil patches compared to foreign soil patches, nor did species take up less tracer from own compared to foreign soil patches. Using structural equation modelling, we found that tracer uptake of the plant species was to a varying degree explained by root densities in the various soil patches and by differing soil nutrient availability of the soil patches. We conclude that soil legacy effects are inextricably connected to soil nutrient availability, which needs to be taken into account in plant-soil feedback research to understand the processes that shape plant communities. 4. +content = "Within-individual and among-individual variation in expression of key environmentally sensitive traits, and associated variation in fitness components occurring within and between years, determine the extents of phenotypic plasticity and selection and shape population responses to changing environments. Reversible seasonal migration is one key trait that directly mediates spatial escape from seasonally deteriorating environments, causing spatio-seasonal population dynamics. Yet, within-individual and among-individual variation in seasonal migration versus residence, and dynamic associations with subsequent reproductive success, have not been fully quantified. We used novel capture-mark-recapture mixture models to assign individual European shags (<i>Phalacrocorax aristotelis</i>) to 'resident', 'early migrant' or 'late migrant' strategies in two consecutive years, using year-round local resightings. We demonstrate substantial among-individual variation in strategy within years, and directional within-individual change between years. Furthermore, subsequent reproductive success varied substantially among strategies, and relationships differed between years; residents and late migrants had highest success in the 2 years, respectively, matching the years in which these strategies were most frequently expressed. These results imply that migratory strategies can experience fluctuating reproductive selection, and that flexible expression of migration can be partially aligned with reproductive outcomes. Plastic seasonal migration could then potentially contribute to adaptive population responses to currently changing forms of environmental seasonality."

+content = "The ascendancy of global value chains (GCVs) has seen the transfer of carbon emissions embodied in every step of international trade. Building a coordinated, inclusive and green GCV can be an effective and efficient way to achieve carbon emissions mitigation targets for countries that participate highly in GCVs. In this paper, we firstly account the energy consumption, territorial and consumption-based carbon emissions of Belarus and its regions from 2010 to 2017. The results show that Belarus has a relatively clean energy structure with 75% of Belarus' energy consumption from imported natural gas. The 'chemical, rubber and plastic products' sector has expanded largely over the past few years; its territorial-based emissions increased 10-fold from 2011 to 2014, with the 'food processing' sector displaying the largest increase in consumption-based emissions. The analysis of regional emission accounts shows that there is significant regional heterogeneity in Belarus with Mogilev, Gomel and Vitebsk having more energy-intensive manufacturing industries. We then analysed the changes in Belarus' international trade as well as its emission impacts. The results show that Belarus has changed from a net carbon exporter in 2011 to a net carbon importer in 2014. Countries along the 'Belt & Road Initiative', such as Russia, China, Ukraine, Poland and Kazakhstan, are the main trading partners and carbon emission importers/exporters of Belarus. 'Construction' and 'chemical, rubber and plastic products' are two major emission importing sectors in Belarus, while 'electricity' and 'ferrous metals' are the primary emission exporting sectors. Possible low-carbon development pathways are discussed for Belarus through the perspectives of global supply and value chain."

+content = "Within-individual and among-individual variation in expression of key environmentally sensitive traits, and associated variation in fitness components occurring within and between years, determine the extents of phenotypic plasticity and selection and shape population responses to changing environments. Reversible seasonal migration is one key trait that directly mediates spatial escape from seasonally deteriorating environments, causing spatio-seasonal population dynamics. Yet, within-individual and among-individual variation in seasonal migration versus residence, and dynamic associations with subsequent reproductive success, have not been fully quantified. We used novel capture-mark-recapture mixture models to assign individual European shags (<i>Phalacrocorax aristotelis</i>) to 'resident', 'early migrant' or 'late migrant' strategies in two consecutive years, using year-round local resightings. We demonstrate substantial among-individual variation in strategy within years, and directional within-individual change between years. Furthermore, subsequent reproductive success varied substantially among strategies, and relationships differed between years; residents and late migrants had highest success in the 2 years, respectively, matching the years in which these strategies were most frequently expressed. These results imply that migratory strategies can experience fluctuating reproductive selection, and that flexible expression of migration can be partially aligned with reproductive outcomes. Plastic seasonal migration could then potentially contribute to adaptive population responses to currently changing forms of environmental seasonality."
